Chapter 7
Maybe I should have been less cocky about my pseudo-date with Dracus. Enrique had been pissed at me, and maybe he’d had reason since I’d rubbed it in his face a little bit.
After all, it wasn’t even a date. It was a work thing. It wasn’t even a mission. When Dracus had asked me to fill in for Enrique, he had said it was because I wanted to be a part of the team. But honestly, even Moony himself could have jumped in with the paperwork if it really came down to it. Since it had been all about the food the manor ordered on a daily basis, anyway.
But I had been smug about it with Enrique because a part of me had felt like he was getting what he deserved. Sometimes, he had to feel the consequences of the rules he was breaking. It wasn’t even about being jealous that he had gone on some date – in fact, I wondered if it should bother me more than it did. But if I was attracted to five guys, I could hardly point fingers.
The thing was, I really just didn’t care. What I cared about was that he had gotten away with doing something wrong. And I was glad he was being punished for it.
Wrong of me? Maybe. It wasn’t my place to reprimand him. But this seemed like the perfect punishment.
When I walked to Dracus’ office after I had finished my classes, he was already stacking the papers we had to file.
“You’re early,” he said.
“The quicker we get started, the sooner we’ll finish,” I said. “Besides, I don’t have a ton of homework, I can catch it up at some other point.”
Dracus looked at me with an expression I couldn’t quite read. It was something between amusement and smugness.
“Eager to get started?”
Eager to get working. That was what he was asking me. He wasn’t asking if I was eager to see him. Which told me everything I had already known. This wasn’t a date, this wasn’t about Dracus spending time with me for me.
Maybe it really was just to punish Enrique.
I sat down in my chair and Dracus put a stack of papers in front of me along with a couple of empty files. I glanced at the pages. I was hoping that this time there would be something more, something that would give me a hint about what the boys did on their missions.
But no, this time it was about cleaning supplies and schedules.
I sighed. When I looked up at Dracus, his diamond eyes were on me.
“I’m allowed to be curious,” I said defensively.”
“I didn’t say anything.”
I shook my head. Dracus never needed to say anything to make someone feel reprimanded. It was the way he looked. The way you could read it on his face, even though he never said the words. I’m not angry, I’m just disappointed. Not that it was the case now, but it was the look Dracus had mastered, the one he loved to use, especially on the boys.
